Design of a bioaugmented soil aquifer treatment for efficient removal of <i>p</i> ‐nitrophenol

Secondary effluent reclamation and reuse is an effective solution to the water shortage problem, safety of reused a matter increasing concern. p-Nitrophenol (PNP), common secondary pollutant, can be efficiently removed using eco-friendly bioaugmented soil aquifer treatment (SAT) system at laboratory scale. In this study, sewage plant in Changchun was selected as case study apply SAT for field scenarios efficiently. The simulated HYDRUS-1D code. Biodegradation adsorption coefficient were conducted from batch experiment. Based on degradation experiments, concentration bacteria injected into designed 6 × 1018 colony-forming units (CFU) m−3. To enhance efficiency system, key parameters optimized based sensitivity analysis response surface methodology, which showed that optimal operating conditions initial 86.11 mg L−1, medium 4.27-m thickness, wet/dry ratio 0.28. Specifically, alternated wetting–drying thickness reduced PNP within specific range. This work demonstrates performance applicability removal effluent.
